Would 55mm or 77mm slats be best for your garage door?
All our doors feature double skinned aluminium slats, filled with a special foam for thermal and acoustic insulation.
For all of our doors there is a choice of two slat sizes, 55mm or 77mm.
So what determines the right choice of slat size? Would 55mm or 77mm be best for your door?
We would be happy to run through the choices for you when we carry out the survey at your home, but here are the factors to consider.
Door Size
The size of your door opening may well determine the size of slats that is the most suitable. 55mm slats are able to fit openings up to 7’7″ (2310mm) wide and 7’6″ (2285mm) high, any wider or higher and 77mm slats are required because of their enhanced rigidity. 77mm slats are able to fit large openings up to 16′ (4875mm) wide.
Garage Space
All of our roller doors utilise garage space more efficiently than traditional garage doors, freeing up extra space immediately inside the garage and along the walls. The motor housing of a 55mm slat door is more compact, allowing for greater head height in some garages.
Insulation & Security
Another factor to consider is the thickness of the slats. 77mm slats are around twice as thick as 55mm slats. This leads to improved rigidity. Along with the increased strength comes better insulating qualities, so less heat loss and better sound proofing.
Colour Choices
All our doors are available in a wide range of standard colours, and a custom colour can even be prepared. There are also some wood effect laminate finishes and some paint colours that are exclusive to 77mm slats.
Cost
An important factor is cost. Put simply, 55mm slats cost less than 77mm slats, so when a particular opening size offers a choice between the slat sizes it may be that budget is a determining factor. Either way, you can be sure that any door we supply is built to last, fit for purpose and meets UKCA standards.
